Abu Simbel Temples
Abu Simbel is a masterpiece of ancient Egyptian architecture, built by the legendary Pharaoh Ramses II around 1264 BC. Located in the southwest of Aswan, these colossal temples were constructed to immortalize Ramses II’s reign and commemorate his victory at the Battle of Kadesh. The site is also dedicated to Ramses II's beloved wife, Queen Nefertari. Famous for its incredible precision and grandeur, Abu Simbel was relocated in the 1960s to save it from the rising waters of Lake Nasser after the construction of the Aswan High Dam. Today, it stands as part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed "Nubian Monuments" and is renowned for its Sun Festival, which takes place twice a year on February 22 and October 22.
